Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs
Digest more
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a clear need for a goaltender with NHL experience following the latest update on Anthony Stolarz, and a veteran just became available.
Timing is everything: Forward Florian Xhekaj, making his NHL debut for the Canadiens, had his rookie lap during the pre-game warmup. But within seconds of him hitting the ice, the Leafs emerged from their dressing room, bringing a cascade of braying. Hopefully, he figured it out.
The first came on Nov. 30, 2024, after taking a puck to the head from Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Nick Perbix. He was out for almost two weeks. The 32-year-old then missed five games in January after he hit his head off the ice in a fight with Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway.
The Canadiens desperately needed to get back to the style of play that led to so much success to open the season. They found that form on Saturday, doing things the right way in a much-needed win over the Maple Leafs.
Florian Xhekaj will make his NHL debut, joining his brother Arber. The younger Xhekaj has four points and 44 penalty minutes in 16 games for the AHL’s Laval Rocket this season. Joshua Roy was sent back to Laval, so Florian will take his spot on the third line.
St. Louis Blues executive Peter Chiarelli was at the Toronto Maple Leafs-Montreal Canadiens game on Saturday, which has led to some trade rumors.
