He’s Nathaniel Lowe, recently of the Washington Nationals and quite possibly the only American to go by Nathanial since approximately 1872. In fact, he actually went by Nate early in his career, changing it back to his birth name only after his mama yelled at him.

Boston is finalizing a contract with Nathaniel Lowe and could have him in the lineup before Monday’s game against the Orioles, according to major league sources. Lowe, a former Silver Slugger and Gold Glove winner, will be on a one-year major league deal for the rest of the season.

The Washington Nationals designated first baseman Nathaniel Lowe for assignment on Thursday in the midst of his disappointing season. The move was made as Washington activated outfielder Dylan Crews (left oblique strain) from the 60-day injured list.
