Tottenham twice threw away a lead as they fell to a 5-3 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in a rollercoaster Champions League encounter. Spurs were out for revenge on the current European champions, who beat them in August’s UEFA Super Cup on penalties.

Thomas Frank continued to show a worrying lack of clarity as to the shape of his best XI; once more, big summer signing Xavi Simons was left on the bench, but returns to the starting XI for Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, and Pape Matar Sarr (with no wide attackers in the lineup) seemed to signify a defense-first approach once more.
Frank proved he can get the team to press high in a concerted way, even against a good opponent, as they did for much of the first half. Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall provided energy and purpose in midfield, two things that Tottenham have lacked this year. The front pair worked well and caused PSG problems.
In earlier games on Wednesday, Folarin Balogun had Monaco ahead of Pafos until an 88th minute own goal allowed the Cypriot side to steal a point with a 2-2 draw. Copenhagen nearly blew a 3-0 lead against Kairat Almaty, but managed to stave off a last-ditch effort to come away with a 3-2 victory.
