TORONTO — The tying run stood on deck in Sunday’s eighth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays threatened yet another comeback. Toronto’s history of late-game heroics gave fans hope — even down four runs, they slid forward in their seats. This time, though, Alejandro Kirk’s lazy foul fly found a Texas Rangers glove and hope finally faded away.

Myles Straw had five RBIs in his first career multi-homer game, and the Toronto Blue Jays hammered the struggling Texas Rangers 14-2 on Saturday. Daulton Varsho and Davis Schneider also went deep as the AL-leading Blue Jays improved to 42-20 at home. Varsho went 3 for 3 and scored three times, and Schneider had three hits and four RBIs.

The Texas Rangers’ Nathan Eovaldi took the lowest ERA in the majors (minimum 115 innings) to the mound Sunday and shut down the Blue Jays for seven innings in a 10-4 Texas win at the Rogers Centre that kept the Jays from what would have been their 10th series sweep of the season.
