The House passed a pair of bills Wednesday repealing cashless bail in DC and much of a law passed by the city’s council in 2022 that limited cops’ use of force — including banning chokeholds — and their ability to collectively negotiate disciplinary actions against them.

The House passed the legislation late Wednesday evening. One bill, the Cash Bail Reform Act, would reinstate a cash bail system in D.C. for defendants awaiting trial. The District abolished cash bail back in 1992. President Donald Trump has said he wants a nationwide ban on cashless bail.

An investigation is underway after a deadly officer-involved shooting Monday night near the Deanwood Metro station.
