From imposing cash bail to decreasing police oversight, Congress is weighing changes that could remake DC’s justice system and revive long-running fights over who controls public safety in the District.
The House passed the legislation late Wednesday evening. One bill, the Cash Bail Reform Act, would reinstate a cash bail system in D.C. for defendants awaiting trial. The District abolished cash bail back in 1992. President Donald Trump has said he wants a nationwide ban on cashless bail.

Three reported ill following ‘hazmat incident’ in Northwest DC
In a post shared on social media, the DC Fire and EMS Department said crews responded to the 600 block of D Street NW late Tuesday morning. Officials noted that three people had reported feeling ill from an “unknown cause.” The group was evaluated by EMS at the scene.
