Scott Wedgewood made 22 saves for his first shutout and the Colorado Avalanche extended their winning streak to nine games with a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday night. Cale Makar scored late in the second period for the NHL-leading Avalanche,
The Avs had a power play in the first period, but did not register a shot attempt. Just as Blackwood was in Nashville, Wedgewood was the star of the opening period. He made three or four excellent saves among the 11 to get the Avs to the first intermission unscathed.

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Blackhawks face their biggest test thus far this season on Sunday against the Colorado Avalanche at United Center (7 p.m. ET; CHSN, NHLN, ALT, SNO, SNE, TVAS) at a time when they’re also facing adversity.
The Avalanche didn't play their best game against the Nashville Predators on Saturday night, but MacKenzie Blackwood made 35 saves on 35 shots to preserve a 3-0 Avalanche victory. They can win in multiple ways.
Hawks skaters go to the penalty box often. The Hawks are fourth in the NHL with an average of 12.1 penalty minutes a game. Connor Bedard’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty late in the third period led to the Kraken’s game-winning goal in the Hawks’ crushing 3-2 loss to Seattle.
Ultimately, the Blackhawks provided a mixed answer. In their 1-0 loss to the Avalanche at the United Center, the Blackhawks did get back to their game and were much better than against the Sabres. The Blackhawks even arguably outplayed the Avalanche in stretches.
In late October, the Colorado Avalanche endured a four-game stretch during which they failed to record a victory. In that span, they lost twice in overtime, once in a shootout and suffered their lone regulation defeat of the 2025-26 NHL season to date - a 3-2 setback against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 25 in Beantown.
