Gary "Mani" Mounfield, who established himself as one of alternative rock's premier bassists through his work with The Stone Roses, has died.

Gary “Mani” Mounfield, bassist for influential British band The Stone Roses who later joined Primal Scream, has died. He was 63. His brother Greg Mounfield announced the news on social media but did not provide a cause or date of death.

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother Gary Mani Mounfield," wrote his broth Greg on Facebook. The Stone Roses also posted a message on X (formerly Twitter): "RIP our wonderful brother Mani.

Mounfield was part of the Stone Roses’ original members alongside Brown, guitarist John Squire and drummer Alan “Reni” Wren. Gary “Mani” Mounfield, bassist for the Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has passed away at 63.

The group’s 1989 self-titled debut is considered an indie rock classic, while its long-delayed follow-up, 1994’s Second Coming, spawned the hits “Love Spreads” and “Ten Storey Love Song.” Mounfield joined Primal Scream in 1996 once the Stone Roses dissolved and remained with them for 15 years.
