Officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency are expected in Southeast Wisconsin this week to begin assessing the damage first-hand from last weekend's historic flooding as local and state officials ask for a federal disaster declaration. Local municipalities are first completing their own damage assessments.

FEMA will assess flood damage in Milwaukee County after record rains left thousands of homes destroyed and over 34 million in damages.

Milwaukee County officials said local teams visited more than 3,400 homes. Fifty-three percent were destroyed or had major damage.

Between 40 and 60 FEMA staff will be deployed to southeastern Wisconsin, according to the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management.

Add the Milwaukee Common Council to the list of Wisconsin officials asking President Donald Trump and FEMA administrators to declare the Aug. 9-10 rainstorms a natural disaster and provide federal aid.

Wisconsin’s Democratic U.S. senator says she has little doubt that there is enough flood damage around the state to qualify for federal help. But Tuesday she said she has less confidence in President Donald Trump.

As people across southeast Wisconsin face a challenging rebuild from historic downpours and flooding from August 8-10, a nonprofit is providing some assistance. According to a release, Airbnb’s nonprofit,

"The damage throughout the area is overwhelming," Mayor Cavalier Johnson said after visiting home with David Crowley and Tammy Baldwin.
