Health Matters: Health Canada approves Ozempic to help reduce kidney decline
Health Canada has approved Ozempic in an effort to help reduce the risk of kidney decline for patients living with Type 2 diabetes. The decision comes after an international clinical trial found the risk of deteriorating kidney function was 24 per cent lower in patients taking Ozempic compared to those taking a placebo injection.

The same year, Health Canada also approved the daily injectable Saxenda, another GLP-1 agonist, which can be used by adolescents between the ages of 12 to 17 to treat obesity.
Unlike Wegovy, Ozempic hasn’t been officially approved by Health Canada for weight loss, though doctors can prescribe it “off label” for obesity.
