Semien is a three-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove winner, and World Series champion. He wasn't incredible at the dish last season, but he missed some time and didn't find his stride. From 2021 to 2023, Semien posted 20.2 WAR. When healthy and at his best, Semien is a winner with the ability to change the game in multiple ways.
As mentioned above, Semien just won a Gold Glove award and has been a premier defender at the keystone for a while. On the flip side, Jeff McNeil is a fine defender, but nowhere near Semien. Having Semien cover more ground on the right side of the infield makes it easier to play a subpar defender at first base.
In addressing the Mets' decision to trade Brandon Nimmo for Marcus Semien, GM David Stearns said "last year wasn't good enough and running it back with the exact same group wasn't the right thing to do.
