The U.S. wants to build a nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030, but the first challenge is finding an ideal spot.
NASA’s Perseverance rover stationed on Mars spotted a dome-shaped rock with a striking resemblance to a helmet used during medieval times. The martian rock, captured by Perseverance’s primary camera on Aug. 5, is pointed at the top and dome-shaped on top of a flared brim. It has a rough, textured surface covered in small bumps.
NASA and Google’s work involves a proof-of-concept for an automated Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) known as the “Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant” (CMO-DA). “Designed to assist astronauts with medical help during extended space missions, this multi-modal interface leverages AI,” Google said in an online post.
Psyche’s twin cameras recorded long-exposure images of Earth and the Moon. From 180 million miles away, both appeared as faint dots.
In their report, Lal and Myers estimate it would cost about $800 million annually for five years to build and deploy a nuclear reactor on the Moon. Even if DoE support can prevent NASA's staffing cuts from kneecapping the project, its feasibility will hinge on if the Trump administration ponies up the cash to execute on its own bold claims.
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) hasn’t given it a name yet, but NASA has announced that astronomers discovered a new moon orbiting Uranus using images taken by the James Webb Space Telescope’s near-infrared camera last February.
