Nantucket announced Tuesday that all South Shore beaches would be closed due to large surf and dangerous rip currents from approaching Hurricane Erin.

The storm has already prompted evacuation orders on North Carolina's Outer Banks and warnings about dangerous rip currents and swells along the East Coast.

Evacuations were ordered beginning Monday on Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks, the thin stretch of low-lying barrier islands that juts far into the Atlantic.
