Donald Trump has said a meeting between Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian president Vladimir Putin could take place within two weeks, German chancellor Friedrich Merz said after talks at the White House.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that he would like to see President Trump participate in a future meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, should such a face-to-face come to fruition.

President Trump said Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff are coordinating with Russia and Ukraine.

President Donald Trump said Monday he called Russian President Vladimir Putin after holding meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House, adding he “began the arrangements” for a discussion between the leaders of the two warring countries.

The Kremlin's readout came after Trump said earlier Monday that he had begun arranging a face-to-face meeting between Putin and Zelensky.

The Ukrainian leader's visit to the White House in February ended in a heated argument. Monday's meeting with President Trump was less fraught.

President Trump has offered only vague assurances of security guarantees for Ukraine if President Volodymyr Zelensky agrees to cut a deal with Russia.
