A push by the Trump administration to end Russia's war on Ukraine appears to make headway, with Kyiv saying Zelenskyy could visit D.C. within days to finalize a deal.
A new U.S. push to end Russia-Ukraine fighting has set off a flurry of diplomacy by American, European, Russian and Ukrainian officials.
Ukraine has reportedly agreed to a potential peace deal with Russia in what could be a massive step towards bringing the devastating four-year war to an end.
The initial 28-point American proposal was widely interpreted as favorable to Russia, containing as it did several long-held maximalist Kremlin demands. Among them were that Ukraine cut its armed forces by more than half and cede swaths of territory not yet occupied by Russia.
Ukraine, US and European officials met in Geneva to discuss the draft plan presented by Washington to end the nearly 4-year old conflict.
As European allies and the Ukrainians haggled over the details of an initial 28-point plan that would have given Donbas over to Russia, White House officials stressed that Trump doesn’t have red lines – just as long as both sides agree and the war comes to a close.
The update was issued hours after Russia launched a wave of overnight attacks on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, with at least seven people killed in strikes that hit city buildings and energy infrastructure. A Ukrainian attack on southern Russia killed three people and damaged homes, authorities said.
