CNET on MSNPS5 Price Increases Hit US Gamers This Week
Starting Thursday, you can expect to pay more for a new PlayStation, thanks to "a challenging economic environment."
Sony has announced that it will increase the recommended retail price of the PlayStation 5 in the US. In a post on the official PlayStation Blog, the manufacturer stated that "a challenging economic environment" has led to the "difficult decision" of increasing the price of all PS5 consoles by $50.
The PS5 isn't the only gaming console to experience a price hike in the US this year. In May, Microsoft raised the price of the Xbox Series X to $600 in the US, up $100 from its original $500 price tag. It also raised the price of the Xbox Series S to $380, up $80 from the $300 price tag it launched at.
There's plenty of headsets from the brand that are fully compatible with the Sony pixel-pusher, from the Stealth 700 Gen 3 to the Stealth 600 Gen 3, but so far, the Atlas 200 remains the first of its kind to be officially licensed and bear that iconic blue and white Sony branding.
Every version of the PlayStation 5 is now $50 more expensive in the U.S., but at least for now, a new deal at GameStop will cover the difference. The meme stock retailer announced it will start giving anyone who trades in their last-gen consoles an extra $50 in-store credit toward the purchase of a new PS5.
